Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center of Westbury is a 24 hour, 7 day per week, veterinary, emergency, trauma, and specialty hospital dedicated to exceeding our clients expectations. Our team is able to offer a wide range of expertise in specialties including diagnostic imaging (including CT scans, MRIs, Ultrasounds, and Radiology), emergency, trauma, and critical care, internal medicine (including endoscopy), pet loss support, radioiodine (I-131), hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), social work services, and surgery (including laparoscopy). We work as an extension of, and in collaboration with your family veterinarian. We are available 24/7/365 to provide your pet peace of mind when you need it most.

  • Norma White-Weithers

    DVM

    Dr. White-Weithers is one of two board certified veterinary dermatologists on Long Island. She is a graduate of Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she also completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery. She went on to complete a residency in Veterinary Dermatology at the University of Georgia. She returned to The College of Veterinary Medicine Tuskegee University as an Assistant Professor in dermatology and internal medicine for seven years, during which time she published numerous articles and book chapters as well as achieved tenure. She has given lectures and presentations around the world and her work is studied by today's students in dermatology. She is a proud member of the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology. Prior to joining the Center, Dr. White-Weithers was an associate dermatologist at Veterinary Allergy and Dermatology Referral Services in Houston.

  • Laurie M. Donovan

    DVM

    Dr. Laurie Donovan graduated Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science is Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary Medicine from the University of Massachusetts in 2002. In 2007, she graduated Cum Laude with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from St. George's University of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada, completing her final year at North Carolina State University. After graduation, Dr. Donovan went on to complete a Rotating Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery from The Center for Specialized Veterinary Care in Westbury, New York where she was honored as the 'Intern of the Year' in 2008. Her professional interests lie in internal medicine, pediatrics, and critical care. We are excited to have Dr. Donovan remain part of the VREC team as an Emergency Clinician in the Emergency and Critical Care Department.

    Verna Serra completed her undergraduate studies at New York University, receiving a bachelor's degree in Biology. She went on the receive her DVM degree from Louisiana State University in 2009 followed by completion of a rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Susan Kimmel

    DVM

    Dr. Susan Kimmel was born and raised on Long Island and attended Baldwin High School. Dr. Kimmel received a BS degree with honors from Cornell University in 1992. She is a graduate of Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She then completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Following this training, Dr. Kimmel continued at the University of Pennsylvania as a resident in small animal internal medicine and then remained at the University of Pennsylvania for 2 years as a faculty member, where she taught students, interns, and residents in small animal internal medicine. Dr. Kimmel is a former partner and founder of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Allergy Specialists in Manhattan, and director and founder of Homecare Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialists serving the 5 boroughs and Long Island. Dr. Kimmel has appeared on Good Day New York, and is proud to have been able to contribute to the care of the Search and Rescue Dog Operation with the Suffolk County SPCA MASH unit at the World Trade Center. Dr. Kimmel has performed and received grants for multiple clinical research projects, and she has spoken at professional meetings, and published abstracts and journal articles in the fields of diabetes mellitus, intestinal disease, pancreatitis, electrolyte abnormalities, thyroid disease, asthma, and liver disease. Dr. Kimmel's special interests include endoscopy, critical care, gastrointestinal disease, endocrine disease, allergy, nutrition, and general problems in internal medicine. In 2008, Dr. Kimmel was appointed Medical Director of Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center of Westbury.

  • Gerald Post

    DVM

    Dr. Gerald Post is one of approximately two hundred board-certified veterinary oncologists in the United States. Dr. Post graduated with distinction from Cornell University in 1983 and received his DVM degree from the University of Minnesota in 1988. In 1991, he completed a residency in Oncology at the Animal Medical Center in New York and in 1992 became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Post has authored many papers and book chapters on the topics of oncology and hematology and was recently recognized by New York magazine as one of the best veterinarians in the Tri-State area. Recently Dr. Post and colleagues have authored two seminal papers significantly advancing the treatment of both B-cell lymphoma and T-cell lymphoma in dogs. Dr. Post has devoted his life to animals and has always had a strong interest in small animal oncology.

  • Michael Linderman

    DVM

    Dr. Michael J. Linderman earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Stony Brook University in 1998. He earned his DVM at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006 and went on to complete a rotating internship in internal medicine and surgery at the Brightheart Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center in Westbury Long Island. He completed his oncology residency training under the mentorship of Dr. Gerald Post and Dr. Edwin Brodsky. Dr. Linderman has received board certification from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of oncology.

  • Gina A. Olmsted

    Dr. Gina A. Olmsted earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stony Brook University in 2003. She then went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. Dr. Olmsted completed a small animal medical and surgical internship at Long Island Veterinary Specialists in 2009. After completing her internship she went on to work as an associate veterinarian in Long Island. Dr. Olmsted is a candidate to receive board certification from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the specialty of oncology and is currently completing a medical oncology residency under the mentorship of Dr. Gerald Post. Dr. Olmsted enjoys spending her free time with her furry children, her dog Miracle and her two cats Cherub and Stripe.

  • Andrew Mercurio

    DVM

    Originally from the small town of Cumberland, RI, Dr. Mercurio graduated as class salutatorian in 2003 from Assumption College in Worcester, MA with a B.A. in Biology and advanced studies in philosophy. He received a DVM degree from Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. Dr. Mercurio also interned at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA as a Small Animal Intern. In July of 2011, he completed a combined Masters of Science and Small Animal Surgery Residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. He has completed research in feline renal transplantation, upper airway diseases, and periosteal trauma, received a Small Animal Clinical Award and an Academic Excellence Award. Dr. Mercurio is a board certified veterinary surgeon. Dr. Mercurio enjoys hiking, skiing, going to the beach, playing acoustic guitar, drawing and painting. He is married to a Veterinarian and has 2 rescued dogs and cats as pets.

  • Jaclyn Smith

    DVM

    Dr. Jaclyn Smith graduated with honors from The Ohio State University in 2003 with a Bachelors of Science in Medical Dietetics. In 2008 she earned a degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Smith completed a small animal medical and surgical internship at the Animal Emergency and Referral Center in Northbrook, IL and a medical oncology internship at Georgia Veterinary Specialists in Sandy Springs, GA. She is currently an oncology resident under the mentorship of Dr. Gerald Post and Dr. Edwin Brodsky. Dr. Smith enjoys spending her free time with family, her 2 dogs, and cat.

  • Jennifer McDaniel

    DVM

    Dr. McDaniel is a native of Michigan. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and then continued on to veterinary school at Michigan State University. She then completed a one year, small animal internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals. She completed a one year, veterinary oncology internship with The Oncology Service in Washington, DC. She joined our oncology resident program under the mentorship of Dr. Gerald Post in July of 2011.

  • Roman Savicky

    DVM

    Dr. Roman Savicky received his Bachelor's Degree in Agribusiness & Pre-Veterinary Medicine from Arizona State University in 2001. He went on to Colorado State University, where he received his DVM in 2007. He completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine, as well as a surgical internship at Michigan Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Savicky has enjoyed volunteer work with Remote Area Veterinary Services where he performed surgeries in underdeveloped communities. As a surgeon, Dr. Savicky is especially interested in minimally invasive, thoracic and orthopedic surgeries. He is a member of national and multiple state Veterinary Medical Associations in addition to the Veterinary Orthopedic Society.
